Flatstick Pub is a Pacific Northwest-based bar and entertainment brand known for its craft beer, draft cocktails, and unique mini-golf and party experiences. With growing demand and six locations, managing consistent operations, especially tip calculations, was a growing challenge. Brandon Pettersen, the company’s Finance Manager, oversees payroll operations and played a key role in modernizing Flatstick’s tip payout system.

Problem

Flatstick Pub’s GMs were spending 2–3 hours each week manually calculating tips using complex spreadsheets across two separate tabs per location. These sheets had to be meticulously maintained for payroll and record-keeping, often requiring hidden fields, locked formulas, and manual updates. Tip data was emailed daily, often the next morning, taking up valuable time when GMs needed to be focused on team operations. Leadership also needed a more defensible, scalable system as they moved away from bi-weekly payroll and transitioned providers.

Solution

To simplify and standardize tip management, Flatstick Pub implemented TipHaus across all 6 locations. TipHaus replaced spreadsheets with automated, rules-based calculations and provided a consistent, scalable solution integrated with Clover POS and allowing custom export with Homebase payroll.


Flatstick Pub also adjusted its tip pool structure from granular, daily BOH/FOH distributions to a simplified, fixed percentage model - allocated by hours worked, supported by TipHaus’ time of sale feature, which as the name says allows to divide tips among employees fairly based on the time when the sale happened and which employees were on the clock. Employees now know exactly what to expect, and GMs have more time to focus on team leadership and operations.
